Last Sunday (Feb 23, 2014), I photographed the Los Angeles Chinatown Firecracker Run. This was the second year for me as my wife and her friends participate in the 10K. Last year I was shooting for myself. This year I was shooting for the Firecracker Run as it turns out a friend of mine and also a Deloitte co-worker, Bryan Yue provided a Media Pass so I could explore the entire event. _MG_5583© Reidar Schopp, All Rights Reserved, www.RLSFoto.com. February 23, 2014 Los Angeles Chinatown Firecracker Run. This year I received a Media badge which allowed me more access to behind the scenes areas. But, I prefer to shoot the runners on the road, away from the finish lines.
Similar to last year, most of my time was spent out on the course capturing the runners. Unlike last year, I shot color rather than infrared images (without editing, the photos are brown when outside whereas in my studio they tend to be a more pleasant blue).
Like last year, many runners enjoy a bit of ham with their photo. Jumping, running past and then collecting friends and then running past again, you can tell that most are out just for the fun of participating. Once the serious participants run past, sweating, appearing in pain, and certainly some grasping for air, the following are a parade of a multitude of people including friends, families, children, and dogs.
I have never shot any of the larger running events such as marathons, so not sure if the same feeling of celebration exists during the course, but it certainly makes this a fun event, especially for my camera and I. And, lunch following the race at Ocean Seafood with friends is a great end to this charitable event (www.Firecracker10.org).
